Croquet 2005

Croquet tournament - 29 June 2005.

The CERN Croquet Club (located on the CERN Prévessin site - 10 minutes by car from the CERN main site in Geneva) has agreed to host an Oxford v. Cambridge croquet tournament. The version played will be Golf croquet, as Association croquet is too complex for beginners.

The President of the Club, Norman Eatough, has also kindly agreed to coach those of us who are not familiar with croquet. After the brief coaching session, a series of games will be held. It is possible to hold four games simultaneously (two players in each game) lasting about one hour each.

The event will take place on Wednesday 29 June 2005 and could start as early a 5.30 p.m., should there be enough people to form a team at that time. The event will be followed by an informal, inexpensive dinner (for those who wish to join) at one of the restaurants in Meyrin-village.

The CERN Croquet Club also offers a course of four lessons, starting with easy-to-learn Golf croquet (Association croquet is offered subsequently), on Wednesday afternoons to retirees, otherwise as mutually agreed. The first session is free, then CHF 30 are charged to cover the next three sessions. When a newcomer joins the Club, the CHF 30 are deducted from the annual subscription (CHF 110 the first year, then CHF 220). Swiss Croquet Association champions (all CERN club members) play in the annual European and World championships. Anyone interested should contact Norman Eatough on norferga.itov@wanadoo.fr.

Results : Oxford scored 54 points and Cambridge scored 52 points. However, there were 6 Oxford teams and only 4 Cambridge teams. On average per team Oxford scored 9 points whereas Cambridge scored 13 points. Therefore, Cambridge won.
